Some other books that would also be useful are the Exam Cram series. I just picked up their A+ cert. books at Barnes and Noble yesterday.

A+ Study book 29.99
A+ Practice test book w/several practice exams and a CD full of practice tests 19.99
Both books are also on sale for 20% off. I got both for a little more than $40.00.

I don't know anyone that is certified, but is it true that it costs a bunch of money to take the test?

There are any number of good sites and some that have a limited online test (like 10 questions), all you have to do is enter "A+" or "A+ certification" into a search engine.

I took the tests back in October 99, the tests are relatively easy but broad in scope, covering very basic stuff from many areas of computer and printer knowledge -some questions are vauge or misleading. As I'm sure you know, there are two test modules that make up the A+ (70 questions each) the "core," or hardware module, and the "DOS/Windows," I would suggest that you brush up on Windows 3.1, as the test does touch on this as well.

Things to know for sure are: IRQs, I/O address, and laserjet printers - there will be a number of questions about these.

Since you will be spending a lot of money on the tests I would suggest a thorough preperation - remember that you will be kind of stuck with your score - so be sure to get a good one.

Two books I found helpful were the "A+ for Dummies" (book and flash cards - includes CD with limited test, more can be purchased online and I suggest you do), and the "A+ Certification Study Guide" by Syngress/Osborne (red, blue,&silver book) which also includes a CD with limited tests).

If you purchase certain of the online tests they will give you a voucher (usually worth the price of what you purchase) that can be used towards your A+ test at certain test centers - so the practice test essentially costs you nothing.

Do your homework and take the practice tests everyday until the day before you take the test...

The test center will be saying, "That's the fastest we've ever seen anyone take these before...and your score was almost perfect."

...you'll probably miss at least one because of the bass-ackwards way it's worded.

You could do a sizeable upgrade for the price of the tests. It cost me $256 ($128 for each module - funny they must be pricing in binary). Some schools administer the tests for about $100 each - you need to pass both modules to be certified.

I also spent about $160 in study material - $50 of which was refunded in voucher towards the test fee.

P.S. BTW & Etc. ..can I brag? http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif I got 95% on the hardware and 96% on the DOS/Windows http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Funny about the DOS/Windows score - 6 years ago I was so computer ignorant that when I saw book on DOS at the local bookstore I thought it meant "do's" for computers, as in "Do's and Don'ts'

Congrats CMonster!! Impressive!

Say...I've been wanting to ask you a question for a long time, if you don't mind. What see (sea) are you a monster in? hehe

Hi Nathan,

That would be the "Cookie" sea;

I was a little upset and concerned about privacy when we were required to register to use the new "Ultimate" BBS - and I voiced my frustration in the forum - then certain system administrators http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif suggested that I could even register as the "Cookie Monster," if I so desired. He assured me that all persomal information was optional and furthermore explained that even the email address just had to LOOK authentic.

...and so there you have it "CMonster" - and I love that name... only wish the "C" was for programing language.

Same here, I paid for the tests and studied by myself. Its cheap as hell, a full course in a group seession is nearer £2000... not cheap.

I too got sweet marks, not sure if I should say what exactly, don't want to put Cmonster down http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Also a few revision books dont hurt.
