just to let you all know, i just bought a new bigger heatsink & ball bearing fan (still a standard one - no water cooling here) and a little thermal paste and my k62 has now hit 550.... am gonna run it at this for a while before i try the 6x multi......

performance in sandra is as follows...

CPU 1412 Mips
FPU 659 Mflops
Integer MMX 1438 it/s
Floating point 3d/now 1081 it/s

looking 100% stable, and yes i am grinning a little http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Got mine at 525 (5x105 at 2.4v).
Good to hear someone on this board has made 550 (I get late Windows errors "configmg???" at 5x110 and 2.6v).
Keep us posted!

thanks guys.... i cant really work out why im so obsessed with clocking it so high, all i do really is browse the internet and muck around lol. had a p75 clocked to p100 before this and only upgraded cos i was sick of my mp3's taking 20 mins a song to encode, adn the fact they used up about 90% of my processor lol

system is a bit rapid and well worth the gamble if anyone out there is considering clocking theirs, i might drop the voltage back to 2.4v see if it still runs ok, and yeh, im grinning from one ear to the other http://www.sysopt.com/forum/biggrin.gif

does anyone reccomend me paying the extra for a k6-3? i dont..... but if they clock as good as this it'll be on my little list to santa.....

Keep the k6-2 for awhile. Most k6-3 chips do not overclock to well. Some of the 450's hit 500, but this only a relatively small percentage. The new k6-3 500 based on the new .18 micron core is due out sometime in January. Some places are already taking reserves for them. Also, the new .18 k6-2+ (128kb l2 cache on die) will be out shortly after that.

Just got an update. One of PR guys at AMD leaked that the k6-3 500 should start appearing in mass production and shipped out on 12-12-99!! If this is true, I'll plan to have one very soon http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Side note: The source did not disclose whether this would be the new .18 micron core as earlier expected.

if you go to AMD's site the 533 chip is still .25 so I bet no .18 for the 500 yet http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif

scotter,

the K6-2/533 is still .25 micron, yes. Keep in mind that the K6-2 apparently scales a lot easier than the K6-III.

So while AMD can still crank out more MHz from the .25 K6-2, they have obviously gotten stuck at 450 MHz with the K6-III. Maybe they found an improvement to the .25 manufacturing that gets them up to 500 now, but maybe they switched the K6-III over to .18. The latter makes sense - the K6-III's die is much larger than the K6-2's, and moving the one to smaller manufacturing process first that's bigger and harder to make is the more effective move.

Regards, Peter

I should have add to tthat post that be for you run out and buy the new K6-3 you should read the fine print and make sure it's a .18 and not still a .25 chip http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
I know that I wont be buying another K6 till that happens this 450 running at 550 is fast enough http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
