Wait a minute... Is this topic legal here? Just checking (in hindsight- I just posted a message but decided to ask first).
Thanks-Dave

It's perfectly and totally legal to backup your DVDs, etc. It's when you start talking about sharing and pirating that you get in trouble. I myself have my own copy of the DCSS Windows and Linux software as well as the source code. After all, DCSS started from the notion that Linux users should be able to play their DVDs, too - and not just from Windows.

Sorry, I am not offering up DVD copies. I wouldn't think of doing that here. Just saying that if they can't find the DCSS site, then email me.

Morons? What else comes to mind when the DeCSS source is included in the lawsuit filings, which are public records and can be found at least here (http://cryptome.org/dvd-hoy-reply.htm).

There still exists such a thing as free speach.

That is, until the MPAA bans it.

ok then, I just don't want to get Sysopt in trouble and I don't know if this is considered a warez-type thing which I know they do not allow. Here it goes though:

Just for background, DeCSS is the DVD decoding software that has drawn so much controversy. A judge ruled a couple of days ago that it be removed from all internet sites. Has anyone used it? I found a site that still had it intact and got it. I know you have to save the movies to your hdd but I've got lots of space and want to play with it and see what it is all about. Just curious as to what you guys have heard. If you need anything email me about it. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif

You can also get source code tee-shirts here! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

PS I think the main gripe is that the CSS-DVD code was reverse engineered by or with the help of a staff member/developer, in contravention of the EULA. I don't think it was ever meant to be secure, just a way of proving in law a deliberate attempt to copy a DVD must have been made.
In my opinion, it's the same as region-coding - completely unnecessary and pointless for the end-user.
