I've read somwhere that Athlon 600 outperforms PIII 600 by 25% according to benchmarks. That makes me think that speed of processor should be measured in something else other then MHZ. Think about it. If there are 2 processors that run at the same speed, why one is faster then the other.

I think you really need to put this in perspective. There are a number of other reasons that the Athlon benchmarked 25% higher than the PIII of the same speed (your numbers not mine /forum/smile.gif). First, if two proccessors are rated at the same speed and they are not overclocked then they are the same speed, or extrordinariy close. Second, these two CPU's are vastly different in their architecture and therfore each performs better when it comes to executing certain tasks. The Athlon is hands down the better performer in respect to 3D gaming but the Pentium III can outperform the Athlon in respect to other tasks. Due to the fact that the vast majority of benchmarks are based on 3D performance, I think you can see why the Athlon has shown to be a superior proccessor. Also, I think you will agree that the motherboard also has an impact on how a machine will perform in benchmarks, and because we will never see a chipset that will let you run an Athlon and a Pentium III we will never have a truly level playing field upon which to compare the two. Benchmarks are an evaluation of the machine not of the proccessor alone, therfore I don't think you should rely so heavily on benchmark results to tell you which is a faster chip. I think it all comes down to what your going to be primarily be using the processor for and how good the current chipset's are that are compatible with that CPU. /forum/smile.gif

That is what CYRIX was trying to pull on us all along, they upped the cache and it performed like a Pentium at 300 while only at 225 actual MHZ, it many CPU speed testors they include this ration, it is called the PPR, the Pentium Performance Rating. I would love to see this on the new Athlon 1GH!!!

I saw a first AMD comercial today. Finally. I was wondering why in the hell they don't advertise, well, it's about time.

Felix,
your qoute 'Second, these two CPU's are vastly different in their architecture and therfore each performs better when it comes to executing certain tasks. '
could you give me an example of a certain task when PIII outperforms Athlon?
hmmmm.

ohh yeh mobo will have a 2-3% (at the most, not 25%) impact on performance of the whole system.

Thanks for the feedback thou, good try. hehe
