Hello everybody,

Ok then i Have a pii-266 64mb and a voodoo2.
I am getting a TNT2 when it comes out, and still have a bit of spare cash left.

Im trying not to spend the money on essentails like food, so im thinking of either a celron-a 400, or a 8 gig HDD, ( i already have a 4.3 gig and 1.2 gig, and still have over 2.8 gig of free space!)

So what should i do? Do i go to a celeron A 400, even though everone hates them, or should i go HDD, or another 64mb of RAM???

any help would be appreciated, as i cant decide!

Ta

Ian

Hi!
1st-not everyone hates Celerons (see my thread "OK, watcha got?")
2nd-noone else can make that decision for you, send me the money and i will tell you what i did (i promise not to spend it on food)

Yeah, But a little advice as to the performance increase would be appreciated, 128mb over 64mb or a 400 celron over a Pii266

You see, i have never had a celron and have always heard bad reports about the level2 cache being so small, so that why i was asking the world, for some worldy words of wisdom

In my opinion, I wouldn't upgrade the processor at this point. Rule of thumb I follow is when you can almost double your computing power, then upgrade the processor and system. But if there are somes games you want to play and the 233 is not fast enough, then that's a different thing.

I would take the money and add more memory. More memory solves a lot of problems and makes the system run much smoother and cooler. And don't worry whether it caches it or not. That's highly over rated for the most part. There are many things that are installed on your system that can slow it down.

Good Luck!

sorry AlexHaden, i'm feelin' a little silly this morning.

i wasn't satisfied until i had 128M (now my swapfile usage is next to nothing), and not having any Celeron experience, i can't say much about your CPU question.

nope, i'm gonna keep my mouth shut, except to say that Nathan already got it right.

ok then , one last thing,

I have 4 dimm sockets on my board, two of which have 32mb of pc-100SDRAM in each, if i get a 64mb of sdram, i can just stick it in a slot, as theres no problem with that old "has to be done in pairs" rubbish from the old simms????

£50 for 64Mb SDRAM? Including VAT? That's a good buy! Go for it!

Just missed your last message Alex. The answer is yes. DIMMs can be installed singly (that's spelt wrong I think, but you know what I mean).

I understand, its just that when i play games such as SIN, on my pii266, 64mb, i still get lots of "lets read from the HDD" moments, which slow the game down terribly, infact its happening with x-wing alliance as well, when its not accessing the HDD, its VERY smooth, so i guess youre now going to have a "get some more ram" moment ? :-)))))
