Just bought a 2940 UW2, and a plextor 8X burner, Looking around for a goo deal on a FAST HDD. I know the Cheata's ROCK, but their only UW @ 100, RPM. Seagate has another model thats UW_2 7200 RPM. Which one will run faster with this card. And what do you think is the best value of all HDD's to use with the adaptec 2940_UW_2?
Thanks in Advance, ]-[EI_I_</-\T

I've tried the 9.1G Cheetah LW Ultra2 LVD drive with the Adaptec. About $500 now. The 4.1G Cheetah LVD is about $375. They both spin slightly above 10,000 RPM.
Seagate's high performance drives are great.

Hi,
IBM IBM IBM IBM IBM IBM...
Check out the Ultrastar Series. I like the 9LZX: 10000rpm, 4Mb cache.
The Seagate Chetaah is good but IBM is better

Iv'e been running IBM deskstar IDE's for about 2 years now, and love them, thier rock solid fast drives. BUT I looked at the Benches bettween the IBM lz and the Seagate Cheeta and the cheeta clearly came out on top by about 5-10%.<see: storagereview.com >
Also is the Cheeta UW2? I know it runs at 10,000 RPM also but think its' only UW right?
Thanks for your input,I would be gratefull for some specific benches on YOUR drive. Going to the show in 2 weeks, and itchin to put my 2940uw2 to WORK...:->

Yeah. The ones marked Ultra2 LVD are the 80MB/s sustained burst and 20MB/s sustained transfer rate drives. The LW code is the 68pin and the LC code is the 80pin. You can get them with a 1MB or 4MB cache. They also have the Cheetah in fibercannel.
Seagate also produces the regular Cheetah that your talking about.

You mean the 2940 is LVD? I remember trying a LVD drive on a 2940 before I knew the problems and it ruined the adapter card. The interface is not compatible with the LV type drives or cards.

Come on guys. Snap out of it http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
The original 2940 came out long before the U2 LVD drives were developed. There are three (well five if we count OEM onboard controllers) basic Adaptec cards that support the Ultra2 (LVD) specifications. The 2930U2, 2940U2W and the dual channel 3950U2.
The older 2940's are the wide and ultrawides (not ultra2).
The best price/performance would be the 2940U2W/9.1G Cheetah 9LP (model ST39102LW) with the 1MB cache.
Of course you can decide on two 4.5G or the 3950 but the suggestion here is Prc/Perf.
www.adaptec.com/products/promos/targ_u2.html (http://www.adaptec.com/products/promos/targ_u2.html) The information you'll find on this page should answer your questions regarding the controllers. They list links to LVD drives from Quantum, Seagate, and IBM.
