I have a Pentium MMX 200, 32Mb RAM, 2.5Gb Hard Drive and a 4Mb Tseng Labs ET6000 2D Card! My modem is a Rockwell Web Excel 56K V.90 Modem connected to OzeMail MegaSaver in Melbourne (Aus). If I connect at 33600 the modem seems to work harder than 49333 (via RD and TD lights) My download usually stops when I connect at 49333 this is really annoying but if I connect at 33600 the download never stops (keeps downloading). Any suggestions to what is the problem?

You know, I have the same strange problem with my USR 56k v.90 modem. I'm connected now at 50.6K, but it seems like I'm getting a lot more time out than if I'm connected at like 40K or slower.
My theory:
The closer you get to 56k on a 56k modem, the higher packet loss and thus the more time it takes to request information. I don't really think these 56k modems could do 56k even if there wasn't a such thing as the FCC http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif I mean, when these modems were made, the companies knew they weren't allowed to operate at there top speed. Maybe 33.6-45k is about the best range for speed/reliability.
Just my thoughts..

Just had a similar issue, my modem showed 115,200. A site I found last week said that speeds of 115,200, (48,400?) and 36,600 were points at which the info refers to connection of the port rather than the modem. Try the online modem testing. DrVette

I also see the same thing. I have 2 dial up's for my ISP. One I have set to connect no faster than 38400. I use that one for online gaming. It pings lower than my other connection at 44000 or above.

Go to www.hms.com (http://www.hms.com) and download "I Speed" and set to "optimal". Really helped my connection. try it , you'll like it. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
