Hi,

I have set up two computers for two nieces. I am tired of spending my week-ends, driving 20 miles back and forth, fixing their computer since they put any kind of software (mostly games) and screw around with control panel. Since I I am currently using PC Anywhere 9.0 (to control and try to maintain files on their computers over a 56K modem.
- Is there a way to prohibit/allow them remotely to install software without my permission and enable/disable the control panel applet?

I wish that there is some sort of software allowing me to give permission or prohibit their act. Any suggestion and help is greatly appreciated.

you can use the poledit program on the windows cd to deny access to the control panel, the run command, etc etc. I can't remember the exact location on the cdrom, possibly in a folder called reskit.

hope it helps you out - sounds like you got problems there http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Thanks so much for your help. I hope after knowing how to use poledit, it will help me to solve my headache.

If it doesn't take too much of your time, I would appreciate if you can give me a sample how poledit work for a standalone computer or at least point me to any document that could help me understand how it works. I have some problem to run poledit.

After click on File - New policy - A screen with Default Computer and Default User appears - I highlight Default User - Edit _ Properties - Window 98 System - Restrictions - Checked Disable Registry and Only run allowed Windows applications - Show - Add - Give the complete path to the program I want to be restricted - Ok twice - File - Save as Test - An error message "An error occured writting the Registry. The file cannot be saved" appears.

I only used it once and am now running Win2000 - sorry! I don't think it comes with the policy editor, but I'll see what I can find for you
