Always one to error on the side of prudence, I thought it best to ask my SysOpt brothers and sisters their opinion on the current state of DVD-RAM.
1. Is DVD-RAM sound technology or problematic?
2. Can you write both in DVD format and perhaps CD-ROM format (realizing that you would lose a great deal of the space on the written disc – I hope this doesn’t sound like to crazy a question!)
3. Who makes the best quality units?
4. Is it something to buy now or should I wait?
Thanks for your efforts!
Regards to All,

You might want to hold out for a little longer. Last I heard there are still two methods that are fighting to become the standard DVD-RW and DVD-RAM. I really think it would be a shame to hear that you got stuck with the "Beta VCR" of the DVD world.
I may be wrong, the standard may have been set. If so. please correct me...

Actually, I think it's DVD-RW+ we want to win. I believe DVD-RAM uses a cartridge style vs. DVD-RW+'s actual backwards-compatible DVD-RW+ media. What's the point of burning to DVD-RAM if you can't use them on your current DVD drive? That's pointless.

There are several formats (http://www.disctronics.co.uk/dvd/dvdvideo/dvdvideo.htm) . Recordable formats are DVD-R,DVD-RAM,DVD-RW and DVD+RW. I also think there is another but can not remember right now.
This is a good artical about DVD http://www.zdnet.com/zdtv/screensavers/answerstips/story/0,3656,2416363,00.html

Like the others said I would wait until a standard is set, however if you can't wait, and you want a drive that will burn CD-RW and read DVD's, then check out this drive by Toshiba. I don't know a price, but it's sounds interesting. Here's a link:
