Hello. I have an AMD K6-3 at 450. I have had it a month and would like to pump it up to at least 500. I also have a Riva TNT2 Ultra video card. Diamond of course. :0) In any case. When I put the clock multiplier to 5 from 4.5. my mainboard said the CPU speed was 495 instead! I have an Asus P5A mainboard, which has a setting to up the voltage by 10% for overclocking. and it has the newest bios update installed. So, when I overclocked it. it said 495 instead of 500. I didn't think much of it. But as soon as it starts to read from the hard drive, it would scrue up. I dont' know why. I press F8, and it won't let me boot to dos, it will start but freez, it will not boot in safe mode, and will not boot normally. It did this with the voltage uped or not.

So I would like to push up my Bus Speed instead. From 100 to 105 and just see what happens. Now I know the video card can handel that, cauz it's made for 4X AGP. But if will it keep up with the bus at 105 the way it's set now? Or will I have to change settings on the card.

I would like to overclock the CPU cauz I'm getting the Ge Force 256 when it's FINALLY released! The TNT2 Ultra is nice, but I need more.

thanx.

A good many of us have never gotten our K6-3
450's to run stable at 5x100mhz (at any voltage). Most all can run them at 5x95=475mhz at 2.5 volts. Give it a try...

Hello, well I have a Quantum Plus KA, it's 7200 RPM so I'm not worried about that. But I figured that it was the bios cauz I needed to install the newest update to get it to recognize it as 450. Without the 1007 bios rev. the Bios does not recognize a 450 K6-3.

I'm sure that the CPU can handle 500. But I think it's the bios. I havn't tried to increas the Bus yet. But I will. I just don't know if the ram can handle it. It should be able to. The only way to find out is to try I guess.

I will also try the 5*95. see what happens with that!!
thanx alot.

Well as I found out, my ram can take roughtly 133MHz, maby a bit less. But my board only goes up to 120 I think. So I have just put my bus to 105, so now I'm running 475. It works fine, but I still have to see about the heat. I also have a monitor monitoring 6 points on the main board to make sure that it doesn't heat up too much. If this works I will try 110, 115 and so on. Can someone recommend a good heatsink/fan combo for a K6-3 that would be overclocked by 100MHz or so???? I would like one that plugs into the mobo so the mobo/bios regulates the fan speed.

thanx!

Here are the undocumented setting to up the bus speed on the P5-A if you like

FS3 FS2 FS1 FS0 FSB AGP bus PCI bus
1-2 1-2 1-2 2-3 125 MHz 83.3 MHz 41.6 MHz
1-2 1-2 2-3 2-3 133 MHz 88.6 MHz 44.3 MHz

I've ran mine stable @ 115 FSB and I do not recommend the using of the of test jumper as it increases the VI/O settings more than 10% and will WILL kill your memory and your chip fast.

Howdy HACKERS Fan,

Well, I have the same setup, except I'm not as fortunate and have a Viper 550 which is TNT & not TNT2 /forum/frown.gif

Well, I did the exact same things you said you did.

I was able to get my computer to run fine with my BUS Clock @ 105 and 110 and 115. I ran it for a couple weeks with no probs except for one big thing which made me switch back. I only have the 5200rpm HD and when I would defragment my HD, it would screw up all the files and give me corrupted and trunkated files...not worth the extra MHz, so back to 450.

I have been trying to change the multiplier and get the same thing...495MHz recognized...And no windows boot up. Tonight I think I'm going to play with the voltage in conjunction with the BUS Multiplier. Soooo...we'll see from there.

I have a HUGE heatsink/fan combo using thermal paste too...so make sure you have the same or else...HEAT!

Well, good luck and if you get it to run @ 500 give me a holla!

~~Ciao!

The BIOS on an ASUS P5A cannot recognize K6-3 speeds above 450 correctly (doesn't mean they don't work)

I have a K6-2 450 on the same board and it recognized it at 500 when I upped the multipler, but still would not boot to windows...

# 1 go to www.asus.com and get the new bioes update for the p5-a it fixes the showing 500 @495. the new bioes will show clock speeds above 500mhz the 450 chips are very power hungry when it comes to uping the speed try uping the v-core by .2 to .4 volt should make it run very stabole gor .4 then work your way dont till no post to windows then back up .1 volt

Well I just installed the newest bios update last night, it finally did recognize 5*100 as a 500, but as soon as it went to read a drive (a: or c /forum/smile.gif it would freez up. I didn't tweek the voltage due to lack of time, but that's what I will do.

thanx!
