At present, I have a 166Mhz cyrix cpu installed in a asus tx97xe motherboard and wish to upgrade to a higher processor speed but without changing the motherboard. Rumour said that it is possible to install with a AMD k6-400Mhz cpu but the problem is how to go about installing it, please help in stating the steps, thank!!

Yes, you can use the 400mhz AMD K6-2 providing that your motherboard supports the required voltage 2.2 - 2.4 volts, you would set the multiplier to 2x and the bus speed to 66mhz - the 2x multiplier is remapped to 6x on that AMD chip.

Back again,

I just downloaded the revision 3.x manual for your motherboard - that is if you have that revision, the only voltage listed close to the required voltage for a K6-2 was 2.5v but that should work just fine if you have very good cooling. You could probably even run the chip on the 75mhz bus and get 450 out of it.

According to the documentation your board is topped out at 4.5x, and a 300mhz chip is the highest that is listed (4.5x66=297). Anyway, this is not a problem, just remember to use the 2x multiplier, because it is the one that is remapped to 6x.

If you do not have a manual you can download one from Asus
