PIII 450...$187
PIII 500...$261
PIII 550...$487
PIII 600...$633
Alpha P3-125 w/2 60mm fans...$55
ABIT BH6 R2...$77
Seattle based MB...$50
Basic Heatsink...$4
cache spacer...$4

SO what does all this mean? Here is a little demonstration...

ABIT BH6 R2 + PIII 450 +P3-125+ cache spacer=$323
Seatle+PIII 500+Heatsink=$315

So you say, "That is actauly less than the overclocked system!" Yes, but the overclocked system has better parts, and a faster memory system, hard drive access and periferals run faster as well, and the motherboard has more upgradability. But here is the real big one...

ABIT BH6 R2 + PIII 450 +P3-125+spacer=$323
Seatle+PIII 500+Heatsink=$687

Now, not only is the chip far more stable overclocked, as it is cooled proporly, and it is on a good motherboard, but the Ram is accesed faster (133mhz, not 100), and nothing else is overclocked. As you may know, demo systems with the new PIII 600 in them crash a ton, due to heat issues. Talk about incentives to overclock! Your system will actualy run better, more stable, faster, and cost less tahn half as much by overclocking! If overclocking does actualy ctu the life of the component in half(witch would mean that their 600 will die in 5 years, not 10), then in 5 years when your chip starts to die, and the 600s are at the bottom of a page at some hardware site for $5, then pick one up if you still want a 600mhz system. Spread the word!

Here's a theory.

I think KB/cobain is trying to prove that overclocking is the way to go because it's better, not just cheaper. I really don't agree much with that line of thinking, personally.

KB/cobain has always set out to prove that overclocking isn't really harmful/risky, but he's wrong. It is a risk. It'll always be a risk. You're not following manufacturer instructions and that's always risky. We that overclock are will to accept the risks because the reward of greater speed is worth it.

KB/cobain's point with the bottom one (I'm pretty sure he meant P3 600, not 500 (COME ON KB/COBAIN!! PROOFREAD BEFORE POSTING)) was that he feels that overclocking the P3 450 isn't only cheaper, but also "safer" because of better cooling. Of course, once again, I disagree for the reasons stated above.

I hope that's a decent translation/commentary.

Thanks Joel, I think you got some of the workings of KB/cobain's head out into the open, which is an extremely hard thing to do as we have seen with all his posts! Let's see if he ever makes a response to you analyzing attempt...
