It seems CBS digitally edited out a NBC logo that was visible in the camera shot during their new year's coverage. They replaced it with a CBS logo. Is this right? Where do we draw the line of what they edit out or alter in a camera shot?

I can understand why they do this. I think the possible implications to future tv broadcasts is more important than CBSs underhanded tactics though. Why didn't they just shoot from a different angle to keep the NBC screen out of the camera's view? I didn't watch it so I don't know if that was possible. I hope that NBC wins so this type of thing can be nipped in the bud now before something really offensive happens.

It was wrong. Think of the implications this could lead to, This was supposed to be a "live" event. I think they could have "Blacked" it out with a box so that you knew something was being covered or hidden. But to alter the picture like that they should be required to tell the viewers that the picture has been manipulated or changed.
This is misleading the public.

Also think of the trust that Dan Rather has built over the years as an honest newscaster.

I saw this intersting feature last nite(?) about "frame dropping" -- a technique where the networks drop a frame or two of dead air to speed things up. It seems to me that if they routinely frame drop, why couldn't they just as easily frame edit/add/alter, or simply add random content (subliminal junk food vendor frames, like the movies)?

CBS airbrushing-out the NBC logo doesn't bother me that much. NBC was there, and CBS removing the logo doesn't change history. But if they were to add sponsors logo, let's say "Wendy's" for argument's sake, in it's place, I'd be pissed...
