I am thinking of upgrading my computer and I am a hard core gamer. I have a Cyrix right and it is very slow at gaming because it doesn't have that floating point thing. WEll, I was wondering if I should buy a Celeron or AMD k6-3 processor. Which one is better at gaming. I know that Pentiums are the best at it but which proessor is the second best. Celeron or AMD K6-3? Also, which one is better at overclocking?

a Bill seems to be stirring it a bit there, i think amd would disagree with him as i do. amd make great chips but intel have the edge at present. it all depends how much you want to spend and how far you want to go, and what video card you are going to use.

I think you should buy k6-3, because i have seen that it is faster than celeron, because it have more cache. 3dnow! is not very good supported now, but it will be later.

3d games, such as QuakeII, Unreal, Sin, Mechwarrior, any 3d game, and an AGP card, you would be better off with a Celeron. They aren't second best to a pentium, for their price and equal performance, they are normally better it seems. If you aren't going to be playing 3d based games, and doing a lot of applications other than games, and most likely just be using a PCI video card, you would be better off with an AMD chip.

So which chip is better if I play games like Starcraft or total Annilation?

For any games at all get a pentium chip, as you can never be fully secure with an K6. The reason for this is that games sometimes come out with a code or method that is only compatible with pentium chips, and may not be K6's. I'm upgrading myself at the moment and I love games. I was going to get a K6 until I heard about this. No point spending money on UPing for games when a game you really want may need a gazillion patches to run, if at all. Admittedly, companies are now fully aware of the support AMD has aqquired and generally games seem to be fully compatible with both chips now. Celeron gives the same performance as it's PII equivilant, but get a PIII if your mobo (and pockets) support it.
