I have an overclocked slot one 366 celeron running at 458mhz with windows 98. I have 128mb crucial pc100 ram. The problem I'm having is that windows 98 boots up so slow. I have dma disabled and when it's enabled the computer is even slower. The system runs stable but it seems like it should be running faster. It takes about a minute to boot up through windows 98. Does this sound normal to any of you that have overclocked at this speed? Here is my system setup.

Abit BX6 R2
Intel Celeron 366 slot one @ 458Mhz 5.5x83mhz
128MB crucial pc100 ECC Sdram cas 2
Maxtor 13GB HD
Diamond v770 tnt2
Creative labs live value
HP 8110i cdrw
44x actima cdrom
Windows 98 second edition

thanks!

It's probably the Maxtor Drive having problems with the 41.5mhz PCI bus speed (83mhz fsb / 2 PCI divider = 41.5 PCI bus frequency. Try to get it to run at the 100 mhz fsb. That'll get the PCI bus freq back at 33 mhz where it should be.

I'm suprised the drive works at all at 83 mhz. Try booting to the command prompt (hold F8 during startup and select "Command Prompt only") and run scanndisk. You might find a few unwelcomed surprises.

Your boot up time is not only related to your CPU speed and the hardware you have installed, but also what software you have installed and how much, depending on what you have on your system it could take longer than that to boot.

I put a NIC card in and now mine takes at least 30 secs to boot, but once there it cooks right along.

I did use Winboost 98 (picked up on a hacks page) it has alot of nice features to modify boot times and internet connections.

Try some different slots with your cards, sounds wierd but it's worked for me on other computers.

Try bypassing your startup programs. In Win 98 I think you type "msconfig" in the Start, Run area. Then choose the programs you want Win 98 to startup when it boots.
