I was deleting files out of my Program files that I thought I didn't need anymore...Windows98 is running fine after I did it but when I boot or log back on after being down, I'm getting a message saying:
Cannot find a device file that may be needed to run Windows or a Windows application. It goes on to tell me to try reinstalling the application to replace the missing file. Problem is ...I don't know where the file came from and I have already emptied my recylcle bin. So far, Windows is working fine but I have to hit my enter key several times to get past this error message. Once I get past these error messages i can log on to windows and everything works fine.
I know I did a dumb thing and learned a lesson in doing so but was hoping one of you experts can guide me here.

THANX in Advance!!

It's probably just a file from one of your programs, since WIN is still running okay.

Does it tell you what the file is or where it's calling it from?

What is the name of the file(s) that you require? It may be possible to just reinstall a certain program. Like Susan said is probably not a critical windows file, but if it is a windows file, then it can just simply be copied from your Win9x CD cab files.

Thanx U 2!!!
There are actually 2 files...
C:\PROGRA~1\CYBERM~3\CYBERKRN.VXD
C:\PROGRA~1\CYBERM~3\CMAPIENG.VXD

I do not know where the files came from...probably from a downloaded app that I no longer have since I emptied my recycle bind.
Windows98 is running just fine after I get thru these error messages and it is bugging tha hell out of me...
Excuse my ignorance but I no idea about the Win9x CD cab filesyou mentioned.

Thanx Again!!

it's probably a windows proggie that you installed a while ago. Now that you've deleted, assuming that you didn't use undelete, windows still thinks the proggie is there and everytime it boots up either system.ini or windows registry tries to look for it, fails, and prompts you.

Try looking for the paths to those files under system.ini and delete them.

Don't know much about windows, but hope this helps.

OK, it is a Cybermedia program. Do you have a listing for any type of Cybermedia app on you start menu. Most Cybermedia apps are either system utilities or a reference apps (i.e. Encyclopedia, Atlas, Animal Kingdom, etc.)

Just take it out of the registry using regedit.

I agree with Alpha, you can remove them with registry edit. But be carefull using regedit.exe and delete. Make sure your deleting the correct file. You may want to backup system.dat and user.dat first.

If you not familiar with regedit.
Click on "run"
Type in "c:\windows\regedit.exe"
Click on "OK"
Click on "edit"
Click on "find"
Type in "missing file names you want removed"
Click on "file next"
When file is highlighted go ahead and delete.

Hope that helps.
