I am getting tired of waiting for my new MB to get off of backorder at Tiger, so have been rethinking my upgrade strategy. Presently planning on going to K62-350 processor, because I like the idea of 3dNow.
However, does anybody want to talk me into a Celeron instead? Do all Celeron's have MMX extensions? Unfortunately, cost is a BIG factor, so I can't go PII. I have got all the other goodies (raiding them out of my former computer), just getting MB, processor, and RAM. I'll get a case to match mobo. So, any advice for me? I probably won't get into over-clocking (how fast is fast?). Just want fast and stable, don't want to tinker too much.

Mobo: Asus P2B-F (more stable than Abit)
CPU: Retail C466
Slotket: MSI Dual / Voltage Jumpers
RAM: Cas 2 PC100 RAM
This is the setup I'm using right now - It's been perfectly stable at 525Mhz (7X75) for hours now (I just got it today) at 1.95V
I had a Slot 1 C366 before this that ran stable at 458Mhz / 1.9V for month's 24/7!
Plus all Celeron's do have MMX, but don't base your decision on the extra instructions because not many programs use them and even if they do, they don't make that big of a difference.
Celeron: For gamers, basic users, and people like me that just like to overclock the hell out of things http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
-performs the same or better than P2 because the cache is 2X as fast
P2: for people running high end programs that can't afford more.
K6-2: for gamers, basic use, business apps
K6-3: same as k6-2, but better for high end programs
P3: for gamers, high end apps, and overclockers
XEON: for high end apps, server's, and the very rich http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

ABIT alows voltage increases, but I am starting to see some realy good resaults from 3D NOW! However, I cannot yet sugjest it, as I have had no experience my self. And if price is a big concern, get an ABIT. Do not get the BH6, it is kinda instable, get the BX6 R2, it has error correcting technologies. All celerons have MMX. So you cannot afford the extra money (about $100) for the extra overclockable P3 450? I would (did) pay the extra $100 or so over a 366 celeron to get mine, I still am looking for a cool heatsink, but the default one gets me to 558.
Thanks for the good info you guys provided. My Tiger mobo came in today (I was going to cancel if it did not). Not sure whether to be happy or unhappy about the fact that it came in. Too much of a hassle now to return it, and I want to get the system up and running, so will probably keep it and give it a whirl. At least it is not a major investment. If I had been browsing this site before I made my order, I would have gone ATX case and diff mobo. Oh well, hind site is perfect.
This is a terrific site. Kudos to www.sysopt.com
