When I browse the web for PII pricing, I see different prices for 'regular' PII cpu's and Pentium II SECC2 cpu's. What's the difference? And is one better than the other? Thanks all.

Thanks all. gERONIMo 05-20-1999, 11:24 PM isnt secc the type of instructions that hte p3 got? not completely sure but thats what i think it is. makes multimedia shizits go faster and stuff like that. slowrey 05-21-1999, 12:34 AM SECC2 I believe is Single Edge Contact Connect. Basically meaning that the older PII's have a cartridge that the CPU is mounted within whereas the newer PII's, PIII's and the Celerons are basically sold with the CPU board bare and the fan mounts on that. I hope I am right http://www.sysopt.com/forum/redface.gif) [This message has been edited by slowrey (edited 05-20-99).] BBA 05-21-1999, 12:40 AM The SECC2 is the new style casing for P2's and P3's. If you get a SECC2 P2, it is the latest production run as yet. They all are Slot1 and the difference is the SECC2 has the backing plate only with the heatsink attached directly to the cpu chip surface. intel says this cools better and say's they dont even need fans on them! You can always figure a way to put a fan on it though. It is a very good heatsink that gets much better with a fan. The SECC2 aattaches to the cpu holder bracket by a lip on the heatsink that catches, much like the celeron. There are plastic catches that break if you remove the heatsink/ case parts. BBA 2Cool 05-21-1999, 04:31 PM BBA has it there, seems like Intel went with the half naked SECC2 form for the latest PIIs. Which can be a royal pain if someone ordering them doesn't realize it and gets a normal PII cooler as well. The SECC2 uses the same aftermarket coolers as the PIII, and looks identical save for the markings. Kinda strange, that... 2Cool www.2cooltek.com (http://www.2cooltek.com) hondaex 05-21-1999, 06:03 PM Well have the P2 400 secc2 retail version which I got from a computer show for $200 about 3 months ago. It has now thermal plate and the heat sink makes full contact with the cpu and comes with a fan. To be honest alot depends on the die it was cut on which will perform good.Luckly I have no problems running mine at 2.0V 4*129-1/4=515MHZ on Abit BX6 REV 2 mobo and 128 megs pc-100 micron ram. Leo V 05-21-1999, 07:15 PM Question, can you use a Celeron cooler on an SECC2 Pentium2/3? I'm referring particularly to the Celery Sandwich fan, since it requires you to use Pentium2 casing (as opposed to Celery-style brackets) to attach the processor+fan to the motherboard. Do the cache modules on the SECC2 PII/III stick out deeper than the CPU core, on the front? (because that would screw up the flat heatsink's contact) Thanks. --Leo V. BBA 05-21-1999, 09:41 PM 2Cool, I emailed you some pics of my pre-release P3. I dont have a web page to post them on and link to, so you can if you want to. BBA 2Cool 05-22-1999, 07:17 PM BBA, heres those pictures you sent me, and thanks! www.2cooltek.com/secc2.html (http://www.2cooltek.com/secc2.html) 2Cool [This message has been edited by 2Cool (edited 05-22-99).] BBA 05-23-1999, 06:36 PM Just had to get it back to the top again.
