i was sitting in my living room watching the rerun of the screenavers and all of a suden my computer came to life (in another room) and dialed to the internet (dialup modem). so i walk into the computer room and the screen is blacked out (powerdown) but the modem is dialing. it just started all by itself. kinda makes you go hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm dont it.

Is it set to check mail at certain intervals?

It's got to be something in the task manager. Is anything set to update at x time on the 14th?

Did you power up the screen to see what it was doing?

If you are using a browser that has a system tray that stays active( it will show up on the task bar) even when you are offline it sometimes dials out. Neo Planet is notorious for this glitch. Otherwise the previous two messages are a good place to start. I would definately look in the temp internet files an clear it just to make sure no one has installed a dial up that is timed to dial out at set intervals. When I first got online I got smacked real bad by one of these being planted on my machine by an unscrupulous website I visited to inquire about Venture Capital...turns out my machine dialed out and to make a long story short I lost nearly a gig of files. My entire desktop and all of my documents were empty folders;( luckily I stored all the proprietary stuff on Zips.

Good luck

Vincent

PS If it happens again hit control alt delete and you may see what program is calling out.

as far as i konw nothing is set to auto update. mail does not chack automaticaly. i have been running this config since august and this is the first time it has happened. i did power up the screen and all it did was launch ie5 and go to my start page? will kill the temp inter net files.

I bet some how the "critical update" program got enabled to check periodically for updates. Double check to see if it's enabled in your MSCONFIG

i have had that happen once or twice, usually when my dial up networking was set to auto dial on the laung of any internet software. so any time any automatic updates tried to look for anything online my computer would dial up and check and then stay on...once for 18 hours before i got back hom...no i disable anything that dials for me...
