I know it was posted here before, but could someone post again; how to re-wire heatsink fans to get them to run at higher rpm's?
Thanks

first, remember these 3 facts:

1. An overclocked fan fries fast.
2. An overclocked fan creates heat.
3. You could more simply buy another fan and hook it up, I did that untill I had 4 fans, and the heatsink is actualy cold, the CPU colder!

**I'll tell you how to OC your fan's, but I take no responsibility for damage**

On the fan there is 2 (maybe 3) wires. They should be Red, White, and Black.

The black wire is the ground wire (0V)

The red wire is the 12V wire.

The white wire is the signal wire for fan RPM monitoring.

1) clip the ground wire (usually black)

2) strip - DON'T CUT - the White wire coming out of the power supply. This is the -5V wire.

3) connect the wire you just cut to the -5V wire coming out of the PS and cover with electrical tape.

On almost all power supplies, there is a sticker with a power rating. Most have a power rating of .5A @ -5V while the +12 is rated at 7A...

Running a fan at a higher speed means that it increases the Amperage...

A fan using .11A (standard) @ 12V will use:

.156A @ 17V

Your PS can only handle .5A so this will probably be ok with one fan, but 2 is really pushing it! You risk blowing that part of your power supply - so once again, ***DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK***

Thanks guys.
Looks like I'll be looking for sone newer fans with higher rpm ratings rather than re-wire. Got any sugestions? I want to replace my fans on my 3 fan hearsink with ones of higher rpm's (presently around 4000 rpm).
Fans are normal looking 50mm fans with screwdown holes at +/- 40mm x 4 with the center haveing an rpm sensor.
