Any suggestions on a manufacturer, brand, and, in your opinion, will it be a good system or should I look for a more serious price? Ygor 01-13-2000, 09:23 AM Way too wise opwn there. Please tell us what your intended use is. Cad/graphics, games, websurfing, many other possibilities. PCnerd 01-13-2000, 09:27 AM I will use it for programming, 3d graphics (hopefully), games, learning (my major is Hardware engineering. alpha 01-13-2000, 11:24 AM If it isn't compatability you need, go with two alpha 21264s www.alphaprocessor.com (http://www.alphaprocessor.com) (i think) You should build the machine yourself. Dead easy. If you want an x86, get a 750mhz AMD Athlon based system, with 192mb RAM, 32mb S3 Savage4 Pro, SCSI HDD and CD and tri boot Windows 98SE, NT 4 and Linux. Oh, and throw in BeOS for good measure http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif RobFM 01-13-2000, 11:34 AM Am i going mad, or did you say $13000 thats going to be a great PC. I want one too ! jad1097 01-13-2000, 11:48 AM If you meant $13,000 check this out UGM (http://www.sysopt.com/forum/Forum1/HTML/003465.html). I am sure you mean $1,300 though. You could build an awesome box for $1,300. [This message has been edited by jad1097 (edited 01-13-2000).] PCnerd 01-13-2000, 11:55 AM I have seen a magazine at the place where I work and there was a DELL computer. It had 2(two)733Mhz Processors and a Wild Catz(I am not sure how to spell it) video/3d accelerator card. So this is what I am looking at now. PCnerd 01-13-2000, 11:58 AM Jed1097, that is THIRTEEN THOUSAND DOLLARS! My parents are helping me here =) bdog 01-13-2000, 01:02 PM For that kind of money I would build a beowulf cluster. chipbgt 01-13-2000, 01:24 PM 13,000 dollars. holy cow. I dont think it matters what his needs are for a computer at this level...whatever he gets is gonna be sweet...Man, what I would do with that kinda money to invest in a computer....first, I would use the first bit to buy an iBook and run over it with my truck. Just for fun. Then I would spend about 8000 or so on the PHATest computer monitor around. Kinda like the Kate and Leo's on the ScreenSavers....the rest I would use towards the actuall computer i guess....I'll leave the rest of the specs up to others, I just want that monitor..drool.. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif jad1097 01-13-2000, 01:50 PM That monitor Kate and Leo has is $10,000. The new one for the new UGM AKA MACH 2. Juat plain awsome! PCnerd 01-13-2000, 10:07 PM Well, if you have enough patience, then read below about a computer I am looking at. You have the funds, right. PCnerd 01-13-2000, 10:47 PM O.k everybody, I guess we can close this topic tahtnx for the suggestions, I will spend some time looking for a good computer for me. I am sure it will take a LONG time. I am sorry if I offended anybody. But I will check this site out from time to time. Gotta go now see ya! PCnerd 01-13-2000, 10:52 PM Jed1097, I don't want to buy online, I will try to find a stre somewhere shich has the best computers, not BestBuy of course http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif. Well see ya! I will let you know when I get it, if I don't forget. jad1097 01-14-2000, 12:13 AM Holy Sh*t!! Man I wish I had parents like that. I apologize I thought it may be a typo. Do you want to build one or buy one already manufactured? If I had the money I would go for a Dell DIMENSION XPS B SERIES, Dell has great reveiws at resellers.com (http://www.resellerratings.com). I just went to their site and configured one of these and it came out to about $6,000. P3-800,256meg Pc700 rdram,Dvd player,CDRW,34 gig hdd,21 in monitor,etc.. Also like Alpha said tri boot that thing and try to get SCSI drives. Alpha that site is under some serious constrution. [This message has been edited by jad1097 (edited 01-13-2000).] Stan 01-14-2000, 12:21 AM Hi First of all, don't buy Dell. They have good PC, but they are NOT the best around. And, their support is way below average (personal experience)... I you have $13.000 to spend, then go SCSI all the way. I like IBM HD, specially the 18LZX series (9.1Gb or 18Gb, 10000rpm, 4Mb cache). For performance and/or redundancy, add a Adaptec AAA-133U2 or AAA-131U2 RAID controller (RAID0, 1, 5 and 0/1). Go for dual CPU. Win2k supports 2 CPU's. Stan Chainsaw 01-14-2000, 12:55 AM This is gonna be good, I think I'll keep an eye on this post! I hope you are going to build it, either way, you came to the right place my friend. The only initial suggestions that I would have is to define your needs, map your strategy and think about future upgrades. Best of luck, ......CHNsaw SysOpt.com
