I have two Microns at work. They are both imaging machines that we collect data with in our lab. One system kept locking up. So we called the company that made our imaging software b/c the software is so buggy, we figured it must be that. Well, after several days of troubleshooting, I opened the case after noticing the case was warm to the touch and found that the only fan in the case which blew on the HS from the side of the case was dead. I checked our other Micron to find the same thing! Now both systems are happily cooled (although louder- hhhhmmmmmmm) and they are faster now too. Or so it seems.

Here's a little trick we used at work, and might be good for both other IT support folks, or home users. Wouldn't have worked on your issue as the fan you had blew in and across your heat-sync, but for fans that exhause air out of the case, its kinda slick.
In order to observe fan operation on a puter that is not equipped with fan sensors (without opening the case), what we did was tie a small length of very lightweight plastic ribbon to the outside of the case where the fan mounts to the case and blows out air. When the fan was operating, that little colored ribbon stood straight out from the fan by the forced air. When they failed, they went limp (no jokes please) and we knew the fan had stopped operating.
Something to consider for your own needs.

I agree. Nice suggestion. I think I'll try that on my fans that are blowing instead of sucking.
Thanks-Dave
