I need (actually want) a scanner to do some basic work. I promised my brother (the farmer) I would help him put together some marketing materials. Nothing fancy: scan some photos of vegetables, add some text, put them in a flyer. Price is a major consideration since I am not getting paid for this. Any help would be much appreciated.

The Microtek C3 scanner is on sale at Staples for $55. It was #3 on PCWorld's scanner Top 5 an issue or two ago. It does have a lower resolution (300x600) but does a nice job on scanning. I scanned some stuff for a palm tree business and it did a fine job.

I recommend you find a Visioneer scanner at good price. The image quality is quite good and the software is simply the best there is IMHO. Usually, Visioneer has rebates of about $30 on several models. Here are the current ones http://www.visioneer.com/purchase/f2000rebate.html
I currently own a 6100 and like it very much.

Go for the best you can afford, with highest res, it will save you in the long run, as you won't have to upgrade so soon. Microtec have a Real good name with the DTP people Her in doors works with, and they put out a lot of the mags available down here.

Might want to give the Microtek SlimScan C6 a look. Had mine for about a year now, and very pleased. Usually can be had in the $60-$70 dollar range.

I have just recently owned a couple of the C6s and one Canon scanner. I wouldn't trade my Visioneer for either of those. C6 has to have some of the busiest, most confusing software I've seen with one. The Canon software is at least better.

Try to buy the best resolution for the money but do not spend a lot of money. In my experience, the secret is in the software not in the hardware. Try to get one with Adobe Photoshop lite and Textbridge or Omnipage. At the end, the software will improve the scanning. If you are scanning with windows 98, use the imaging software that comes with the os.

Like Antonio said, alot of it has to do with the software. But don't forget the BIOS too. You may need to flash them too.

I happen to like the SCSI scanners that are out there. The USB standard is still a little flaky in some situations with BIOS.

I love liek my visioneer 6100b. It's real nice and did not cost a lot when I purchased it. I recommend them.

Thank you everyone for the information. Also took a look at the user reviews which were helpful. I think I will go shopping this afternoon.

Got to say this is just the nicest list. Pleasant people, good information
