i just got back from my local tele co asking about dsl. the girl says (she guessed at this cause she couldnt find ay info) it is a $200 setup charge and $70 a month for service. they are crazy to charge that much. then i get home and she left a message saying they have no information to give out but will put me on a list. some of you may say change phone co. i cant cause they own all the lines in the county. this has got to be the most backasswards phone co. one would think that in this day of technology in a county of 500,000 people they would have decent high speed internet access.

sorry to **** and moan but i didnt want to kick the dog. end of story i will leave now thank you very much

Hey, in Ireland we don't have DSL or cable, and ISDN is considered really hitech and is suprosingly expensive. We've no internet flatrate and free ISP's are reletavly new.

Better to rant here than kick your dog http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

My ELN/PacBell setup/installation was $200 and the monthly ELN DSL service is $50. Plus I pay an extra $10 a month for the DSL phone fee w/PacHell err Bell.

$70 a month is high tho. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif

Sure no cable/dsl, but we can get satellite internet cheaply at up to 2MBit/sec for certain things! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Anyone in europe who has access to the Astra satellite, take a look at www.europeonline.com/iits (http://www.europeonline.com/iits) . Combine that with the Esat Surf NoLimits (tel. co in Ireland) with the free phone calls, and it's as close to DSL as we'll every get. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/biggrin.gif

I feel your pain. When I ***** at the local telco about line noise/drops, they say "we offer ADSL and ISDN. Check into it!"
I did. ADSL is not available. And ISDN (single modem) would cost $180/mo AFTER a $250 install fee. WHEN they get around to it. I know folks who live closer to town than I do that have been hearing the (it'll be installed in two weeks" litany for the past 8 months.

But things are changing! A competitor (my cell provider) just got the OK to provide local, LD and Internet service.

I have the solution!
move to NC, Brunswick county, and I`ll be happy to hook you up, need a T1 circuit?, isdn? 128k not too bad.

By the way, I work for the phone co.(18 years) the isdn isnt too bad on price but the T1 shelf and card run around 350.00
one reason they are higher in price is they tie up twice the facility than the 56k, same as 2 phone lines.

Internet hookup is just like life. Anytime anyone thinks they are bad off just look around and someone else is worse off.
We have a real upscale area up on top of hills here and the phone lines are so bad that Caller ID will not work. No Internet, these are all in a area where the average home is worth a Half Million or more. I live 1/2 mile from the phone co here and cannot get any high speed lines no matter what I pay.

I live in Missouri and the fastest I can get is 26400 and they told me that was really good for where I live and the lines that I have. Said 19000 would be more realistic but not to worry they intend on updating the lines sometime in the next 2 years. This is the best service I can get in my area. Now that sucks.

I'm also in Canada and have cable modem internet access. I'm pleased with it... very fast. It is also reasonably priced $39.95 CDN (thats like 28.00 USD) per month with a $150.00 CDN dollar setup that I negotiated down to $25.00 CDN.
