I'm having some trouble getting win98 to recognize the serial mouse that I'm trying to use (actually ps/2 with an adapter)...
well, I switched the mouse out with an actual serial Kensington mouse, and reinstalled the drivers and whatnot...
here's the wierd part now - According to win98, everything is working and there are no errors or conflicts, but the mouse still doesn't work, the pointer just sits there on the screen
any ideas???
suggestions??
thx
Z

What brand of mouse is it? How old is it also?

Also, are you sure the adapter works with that mouse? (Try it on another PC.) Those PS2/serial adapters don't work with every mouse; the pin-outs are sometimes different. Microsoft mice, for instance, are seldom compatible with them.

Have you tried another PS/2 mouse on the adapter? Like Rom says, not all of them work....
Heheh go read my post, then you'll see how small some problems can really be.... http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif no need to start shouting at us because no-one has replied http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

I once had a problem where my mouse would not move whenever I installed my USR 33.6 modem. It showed no conflicts either. Whenever I put my Diamond Supra in it worked fine.

I had similiar problems like Smellfunny. I bet you have some conflicts btw your mouse and modem. In my case, i always need to do some IRQ changes in the BIOS, otherwise, only one of Com port can be recognized. Both in BIOS and Windows System Properties, there are some place you can set this, make sure they are the same.

It's a fact that the adaprer you describe will only work in 50% of all cases where used, buy the correct mouse for the port will be the best solution....
How long has it been since you actually cleaned the mouse itself?
It probably is the adapter, that or the com port ribbon cable has come off the board within the case.
Regardless, if your motherboard has the pins for it, you'd do much better just spending the $7 for a PS/2 adapter and getting off the COM port completely.
Much fewer conflicts and you have the port available for other stuff, should you need it.

well, thanks for all of the help everyone... I just disabled anything remotely pertinent in the BIOS, then I fiddled around in win98 for a while, and I also switched around some of the hardware connectors like axel suggested (thx bro)...
here's the funny thing - when win98 said everything was perfect, the mouse didn't work at all, now that the mouse seems to be working just fine, the system properties say that there is some sort of problem... oh well, I don't really care as long as it works
thanks again,
Z
