I can't remember your processor, but check its getting enough volts(especially if you have overclocked) as this is a pretty typical hanging point for me....

One of mine was doing that & gave me fits!
Was not overclocked, nothing unusual about it.
Tried all I could think of including full tear-down & reassemble. Finally put in a different IDE cable (was trying replacement of things, one at a time) Problem fixed & has not reoccurred. Still don't know why, no visable damage...at least none before I cut it up!! http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Have you tried booting to a 95 boot disk and typing in the following at the A prompt?

sys c:

Let us know what happens.

Love it Ed_S - been there myself, but with COM port cables.

I found, on used boards, or new boards with used cables, simply a small pinch with needle-nose pliers of the pins on the board "un-straightened" them enough to seat the plug nice and tight and make good connections. - I.E. the cable plug fittings had become stressed outward over time and no longer made a resistance free connection to an extremely straight motherboard pin.

It's like taking a hinge pin from a door and "adjusting" it ever so slightly so the door would stay where you put it and not swing free on an extremely well matched hinge set.

You don't want to apply so much pressure that the pin comes free of the board or will no longer easily fit the adapter, but just "adjust" it out of line enough to ensure a tight contact with the inside of the cable plug.
