You might have to update your BIOS to support that amount of RAM.
Also r u sure your mobo supports that much RAM? i understand its a compaq so they might have tweaked something...
The slowing down part: if its RDRAM u adding then rule is the more dimms you will add the higher latency it would be which should make computer slower (?)
ofcourse if nothing helps you can always goto compaq (i think) they might help altough probably not for free http://www.sysopt.com/forum/frown.gif

Throw away the 32MB, its worthless in any case. With RAM at $14 for 128MB, its just not worth keeping 32MB sticks. Its probably incompatible with the 256. The Motherboard also may not be able to support two types of RAMS. After taking out the 32, see if there's an improvement.
With Win98, more than 256 is useless anyway. For the type of system you have, 256MB is more than sufficient.
I'd put the Page file on a separate partition though. But with these Compaqs, its difficult to do these things and/or upgrade. Thats why I prefer to assemble the PC myself using components which are the best.
Good luck.

Here is the problem.
I have compaq presarion, there are two RAM slots in
it.
There was already 32 MB RAM in one slot. I bought 256
MB RAM which is MICRO MT 168 pin 7.5ns. I put this RAM
into other slot.
Now when I restarted my computer total RAM size was
288 MB RAM but problem is my system does not untilize
that RAM. When I see performance tab from "My
computer"
properties, I still see same amount( or less) of free
memory. Moreover my computer is more slower than
before.
I already stared my computer many times, I also
performed compaq in-built testing on my RAM.
I have windows 98, windows should automatically detect
the plug and play device. I also looked into add
hardware option of control panel. I did not find
anything.
I also defragmented my c: drive on my friend's advise,
it doesn't helped.
Any suggestions ?

Frankly, if you want me opinion, get a new system. Sorry, probably not the answer you wanted to hear, but I've heard that Compaqs aren't really worth what you pay for them.
Another thing you might want to do, is exchange it if it is still under warranty. HP just bought out Compaq, so it might be better quallity. But, only go these routes IF ALL ELSE FAILS!!!

Dudes, ever open a Compaq? They have the cheapest video/audio/ram components you'd imagine. Sure it works, but the quality sucks. Dell is only slightly better. HP ranks alongwith Dell. OTOH, IBM machines are always built with top of the line components. This is my (limited?) experience. But don't expect Compaq to improve in quality just because its been bought over by HP. They have a much larger agenda in terms of cost cutting, product mix consolidation, .....

Hey Bovon, that is funny.

Almost forgot. ag_pankaj take out the 32 meg strip and just try using the other and see what you get.

ag_pankaj a few more details would be helpful. To get accurate advice, you need to let us know which Presario model you have.
There is a real posibilty that your mobo just won't support either 1)that much total memory, or 2)DIMM modules that large.
If you register (http://www.sysopt.com/cgi-bin/forum/Ultimate.cgi?action=agree) with SysOpt you'll be able to reply here with more details. If for some reason you don't want to register, you can go to Crucial.com (http://www.crucial.com/) and use the Memory Selector to find out what types and how much memory your PC will accept. (click the "Detailed Specs" after typing in your mobo information)
You can also check the Crucial FAQ (http://support.crucial.com/scripts/crucial.exe/faq) for additional help. Here's one that may be helpful;
