Try taking the MSDOS CDROM drivers out of your config.sys file. Burners typically don't like DOS drivers.

I believe the line is something like DEVICE=MSCDEX.EXE something or other. (or something like that)

Just type REM in front of it and any other lines that refer to it. If it works after that then you can delete that/those line(s).

This an error generated by the BIOS, not the operating system or configuration files.

Sounds like an incorrect jumper setting, or ribbon cable connection at the drive and/or at the motherboard.

If they are correct, make sure the drive is selected as AUTO in BIOS Setup.

Hi PSB,
I am sorry to hear that you are still having problems. I have been reading what I can about this problem of yours and the conclusion I came away with was that it would probably be good policy to disconnect the cable connecting the CD-RW, reset the BIOS to defaults, noting any changes in particular you would like to carry over, read the downloadable manual from Plextor and start over.

When I have ever encounter a computer problem (software that is) after saying a number of expletives to the computer and to Bill Gates I sit back and come to the conclusion it is probably a user issue. 99 times out of a hundred it’s me who has made the mistake. I profusely apologise to my well-mannered computer that it is (well it probably would be more so if it wasn’t for Win98) and Bill Gates (not) and work the problem out. Computer users tend to make the problem(s) worst by guessing, being to eager and impatient to sit back, read and understand the manual(s) before proceeding.

It may not be an issue for you PSB but if you do not know what ATAPI is, with all due respect, I would strongly recommend you get all the information you can get your hands on. I know it can be tedious but I think, once you get a better understanding of your Plextor and jumper settings the easier, I can guarantee, it will be for you. If after you have read the manual and it still does not work you may be able to diagnose a problem with the Plextor. It may even be a software/driver issue.

For example, I have just installed two IBM HDDs, Plextor CD-ROM 40max SCSI and Plextor CD-RW SCSI. Now Plextor are respected for the fact that they produce excellent, well behaved drives. I read the manuals (tedious I know but I did and found information which was important to their configuring) and used WinOnCD. Via WinOnCD, I received an error pertaining to the host adapter and this error kept on occurring (this was in simulation mode only as I was getting use to the drives and software and that was all). I was surfing the Net and reading the PDF manual for WinOnCD (140+ pages, tedious again but that’s the way to learn how to use it. Trial and error and some intuition can be a real pain in the a***.) I thought doing multiple tasks would not be a problem for my host adapter but it was. On reflection, it is no wonder the poor thing was struggling a bit. Two 10 000rmp SCSI HDDs, and on the fly CD-to-CD simulated copying over stretched it. I decided against multitasking, and so shut all programs in the system tray and in the backing by using Ctrl-Alt-Del. I made my first proper music CD copy and it came out sweet-as-a-nut as soon as I carried out the above measures.

The moral of this story is that the manuals can be very handy (in Plextor’s case the downloadable one is). Even manuals pertaining to software need careful reading, e.g., PartitionMagic and Drive Image. These are just two programs which, if you do not know well can have disastrous consequences for your data. Read and understand.

Download the manual and repost if you are still not able to rectify this problem.
