Ok. Another noob question.

Here's the hardware:

Tyan Thunder K7 S2462NG motherboard
1.2ghz AthlonMP (x2)
Coolermaster EP5-6I11 Heat Sink and Fan (x2) (AMD approved)
Delta DPS465AB-A 460 Watt Power (AMD approved)
1024mb DDR RAM PC2100 (Crucial)
8cm fans blowing out back (x2)
80mm 2500rpm fan sucking in the front (x1)

Here's the symptoms. Turn on PC, boots up. Install WinME (i know, bear with me). Everything seems smooth, but the PCI bridge and two onboard PCI LAN ports are showing big yellow !!! in the Device Manager. Ok, install the drivers. Not on the Tyan driver CD, only drivers for Win2k and NT. Er..hm. Okay, shut it down, maybe if its got a line from the router, it'll pick up the NICs..turn it off. When i go to turn it back on, all sounds right, but the monitor isn't synching up...turn it off, check the connections. Turn it on. Starts to boot up. Thhp. Shuts down. Its done this like 4 times now, in the middle of Windows, on bootup, any time. Sometimes i can turn it back on, sometimes i have to unplug the power supply to turn it on cos pushing the power button has no effect. What gives?

Just going by a grounded finger test, but the heat sinks or area surrounding the CPUs don't feel excessively warm. Hardly warmer than me, actually. i have the "AMD-approved!" thermal "phase change" pads that came on the heatsinks on there.

i was careful to get all cooling parts that AMD recommended, but still, is this overheating or where might i have bollocks it up?

PS:
i just pulled the heat sink off CPU 1..the thermal goop has melted over the chip. Seems i found the problem or is this considered normal?!

Install WinME (i know, bear with me).

You are aware that Win9x and ME doesn't have support for more than 1 processor, right? The reason there is only Win2k and NT drivers is because those are the twp Micorsoft OS's that support multiple processors...

Yeah, i know. Once i get ME and the PCI bridge up on the prim IDE 30gb HDD, i'm going to plug in the PCI IDE RAID card and setup two 40gb in a RAID 0 and install 2KPro on that partition, dual boot.

Well, i think its some kind of short and the issue seems to be in at least two places.

--If the mobo is mounted in the case with the 3 screws that curve around the bottom righthand corner in place, it craps out.

--If i plug in the power to one or both of the 40gb HDDs i plan on using in the RAID array, it craps out. Same symptoms.

It *works* in this config:
-mobo totally out of case or mounted with screws only along the top and rear of the board
-One CPU/HSF
-One to four DIMMs
-floppy drive
-30gb HDD
-Two 80mm exhaust fans out the rear
-No PCI/AGP cards installed (onboard video)
-Haven't attempted 2nd CPU, CD drives or case fan yet

The one CPU in there now runs at 39-42C according to BIOS, so i think that rules out overheat. i swapped the IDE power connectors around, so a bad connector seems unlikely.

The power readings at the bottom do bounce around, i don't know if that would indicate a short or lack of power? +12 reads a steady 12.34 but the -12 bounces between ranges of 12.23xx and 12.31xx. This mean anything?

It almost sounds like your power supply is not up to snuff, have you checked the output voltages with a multimeter?

Try putting nylon washers between the lower-right mounts and the motherboard, that should get rid of the shorting problem.

Just FYI....no drivers for Win9x/ME because neither recognize and utilize 2nd CPU. They may have only wrote AMD chipset drivers for WinNT/2k because of this, especially if it is early release MB.
