What's up? I get ads that pop up randomly, even while the computer is idle. One is for some video chat site all in lower case letters, and the other is for internet security. I'm behind a firewall, on a network with a shared cable modem. Did I open a port someone is exploiting or something? This is just recent. Is it a bug I caught from some pr0n site, or a new feature of one of my messanger programs?

next time it happens, press ctrl+alt+del and give us a list of what programs are running at that time http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

I've never heard of hackers that break in and send pop-up advertisements, but that does sound like a very lucrative potential marketing ploy. Along with the previous post, I would try the NETSTAT /A command from a dos prompt when this occurs as well. It will give you a list of all available ports as well as the computer name/DNS address and IP of all machines that are connected to them if any. Probably not a good idea to post this result though.

Sounds like some spyware to me. I came across a file named MSBB.exe on someones computer that was causeing just that. It came from SongSpy and I am sure more programs use it to.
Do a search for MSBB.exe here. (http://www.keysvacation.com/)

What's the list of processes that should be running in win2k? I know them all for every other OS...but there are just way too many I dont know about to be messin around. Something along the lines of 20-25 processes, all but the 3-5 big ones look suspicious to me. I ran the lavasoft software, it didn't find anything, and I haven't had another popup since I unforwarded the ports and restarted my computer. (Power outage, restarted the hard way)

I recommend that the next time you get a filesharing tool like a MP3 finder, check it for spyware at http://spyprotect.koolhost.com best before you download, but definitely before you install it. That's mainly a list of those tools broken down by spyware/non-spyware.

You should disable Active Scripting this will eliminate pop-ups:
Tools>Internet Options>Security>Costom Level and scroll down.

are you running Kazaa or Morpheous? if the ad-support for either one is installed along with it, then it can cause pop-ups at random intervals. I've noticed this on several occasions with Kazaa running minimized in the system tray. usually I get 2 or 3 at once!
...the dang thing installed ad-**** when I let it auto-update once, and I have been too lazy to uninstall & reinstall without the ad-support (I believe that I read somewhere that this could be done...).
cya!
