Here's the scoop...
I upgraded my dell latitude cpx from a pIII 450 chip to a pIII 650. The current bios is their version cptx_a12. Here are the problems:
-The display in bootup displays the processor as a 500 PIII.
-In the BIOS- the clock speed is 0 MHz.

The upgraded bios version which I need to install is cpsj_a13. However, when I try to upgrade, two things happen.
-When I try to use bootable BIOS floppys created with Dell's directions, I receive an error message > This device cannot access COM1 as requested.
-When I put the cpsj_a13.exe on a floppy and try to run it, I comes back with the error message > NTLDR not found.

Basically, I can't get the BIOS to upgrade from the A12 to the A13. I was wondering if anyone else had any knowledge of this?

Do I understand correctly that you upgraded your processor before you installed a BIOS that would support it?

looks like you did a bad thing

gonna have to put the old cpu back in to upgrade that bios, too many conflicts showing up

hey? what is the cashe/bus/voltage of the cpu's might be more conflicts there.

I attempted to upgrade the BIOS with the old processor, and it returned an error message that the system is incompatible with the new BIOS version a13, even though the H-Series and the J-Series share the (apparently) same MOBO and every other technical specification. The only difference is that the J-Series PIII processor has SpeedStep Technology.

Cache-256
Bus-100 MHz
Voltage-3.3V - 5V (I think)

I'll probably just give up...
