hey guess what i just formated my comp 3 times already trying to find out what the freezing deal i keep getting! my comp like freezes up every time i go look at the DxDiag thing in the directx folder in the program dir! i have the directx7 and i also tried the 7a but it still did it! my comp also freeze up like on real player 7 plus, i go to preference and onto "display" tab and my comp freezes up!!

i never had this kind of problem before!
i formated my comp 3 times clean install!!

i also get an error when i went to my screen saver tab in display properties saying like an "MCI Error", MMSYSTEM296
but i fix that by uninstalling the particular screen saver that was default of the factory setting of my comp!

i have the diamond viper 770 using their driver. but i don't think that matters cause those freezing up deal happened on "standard display adapter (vga)" setting also!

**** is this probably y2k problem or something?

please help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!

thank you so much for your time people!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Did it use to freeze up before you put on DirectX 7?

How about doing a fresh install and just using DirectX 6.1 instead of 7 for the time being? If that stops the hangs, you've found the problem, and can track down possibly some newer drivers or a patch for the card.

no no no, hehe, see okay i had formated my comp and then i had not yet installed the 7.0 or the 7a yet and i have the old 6 version of directx.

and i had formated my comp millions of times and this had never happened.

i checked my DxDiag on the directx folder tons of times before and comp never froze up!

and the deal with the real player display tap freezing thing, that is too weird!!!!!!!!!

Try out Dave_H's suggestion about the sound, that might narrow it down a bit http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

And PLEASE only post one message for a problem, otherwise it drives me up the wall looking for the thread I responded to! Most people go through all the forums so it will get a look-in!

If the investigating the sound doesnt make a difference then let us know and we'll have another go for you http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

It sounds to me like a bad driver.Did you have this problem befor you reformated? YOu said you reformatted the drive(FDISK)not reinstalled windows ,right? Did you install all the drivers for the motherboard,etc...?
Does it lock up before you install any software? YOu know with JUST WINDOWS nothing else on the drive. The problem is not with DX7 or REALplayer! It sounds like a driver or a bios setting. Just a guess.

Basicly do what richamies said.

Burnup I had a problem simlar to that after installing v770ultra.It would lock up on anything that used graphics, Realplayer, screen saver even loading in programs, sometimes I couldnt even get into windows. I went to Diamond site and found doc for recomended bios settings, and its been purring ever since. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

see well when i meant i format my computer i meant like i had use the 2 cdrom disk that came with my sony pcv-210 computer. i did a full format which put my sony back to its original factory setting and such.
i do not have a windows 95 cd. just sony's 2 system recovery cds. so like everything was back to like when i first had my computer out from the box for the very first time.

now when after i had format my computer, i went to my DxDiag thing to find out what my directx version was, but then it suddenly freezed up. presently my computer is on "standard display adapter(VGA)" due to that i could only access my Diamond Viper 770(non-ultra) drivers from a Zip Disk and i had not yet able to install my Iomega Zip Driver yet.

so like i had to ctrl-alt-dlt my computer.
so then i said "whatever", so i went to install my real player 7 plus and i was after that wanted to change a setting in my "display" tab under the "preference," but then it froze up right after i had click on the display tab itself. so i had to ctrl-alt-dlt my **** computer again.

*LOL* i'm tired guys.

those freezing up problems never occured before when i had formated my comp and my old ATI Rage Pro 3D graphic card was still on the AGP slot, not my new Diamond Viper 770(non-ultra).

This only started happening right after i had formated my comp and the new DIamond VIper 770 card was on my AGP now.

i do not know what to try to look at, the sound card or the video card??

but if its the video card why would it freeze up things when my comp was on "standard display adapter(VGA)" i asked myself.

and why the heck would my comp freeze when i click on my display tab on real player 7 plus preference?!

on the other hand i got an MCI error for the very first time when right after my format i went to shut off my screen saver in the Display Properties. it said something like an "MCI Error" and like "MMSystem296" was something, i forgot. i just remember those two words.
that message appeared when i click the "screen saver" tab on display properties.
i fix that by uninstalling a particular screen saver that was defualt setting to the factory setting of my computer.

but i'm probably leaning more toward my sound card probably the cause of all this.

i already tried that microsoft thing about reinstalling the audio compression thing and it did nothing at all! still doing it.

well thats what i gotta now hahahahaha

oh boy people, i thank you for helping me through this ****.

Glad to hear it's sorted burnup. It's good when people post that they have sorted a problem, mostly because I can stop worrying about it http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif but it's good when you manage to sort it!
