I just bought a maxtor 9.1 as a spare, opened it,let it autodetect then formated it.
I thought W98 was reporting wrong size (9.51). So ran scandisk, ok. Checked Bios, 10246 meg, ran to Maxtors site number matches 10245 meg! A nice suprise to get more than you paid for. Maybe they ran out of 9.1 drives, anyone else have this? Bought at Best Buy $119.

I've had a 6.4gb Maxtor come out of a 4.3gb box before now. These were Compaq spares, though.

Man that is a nice surprise! I guess it is possible that they ran out of the drive you ordered so they substituted it with the next best thing. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Basically, it's the way hard drive manufacturers "count" their bytes. The true amount of bytes for 1mg = 1024 byes. But the hard drive manufacturers, for their reasons, count 1mg = 1000 bytes. That is why your (everyones) readout of the hdd reflects a smaller size compared to the stated disk size. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

I bought a Maxtor 13.0GB Hard drive, and it's only reporting 12.1GB, is this normal?

A friend (I still owe him lunch) gave me a dead Maxtor 3.2GB drive that he bought new from a fly-by-night at a computer show - I told him about the warranty and he just said that he didn't want to bother.
I got an RMA on the drive, paid $8 in shipping UPS - 3 weeks later I got my new 6.4GB UDMA 33 drive and they extended the warranty until 2002!
There was a note that said "We reserve the right to replace drives with a similar capacity drive according to availability."
FINE WITH ME!!!!!
WAY TO GO MAXTOR!!
