ok. I did a bad thing. In my haste I used fdisk to remove the primary partition before I backed up the data. I did NOT create a new partition and therefor did NOT format the drive.

I downloaded MBRWORK 1.06 and am trying to recover the data. The option I need to use (according to the readme.txt file) is option A. The problem is, there is no option A.

1) Backup First Track
3) Reset EMBR area to zero
4) Reset MBR to zero
5) Install standard MBR code
6) Set a partition active
7) Change active harddrive
9) Edit partition entry
C) Capture sectors
R) Restore sectors
T) Transfer sectors

I have searched the archives and found that some of you have used this utility with success. Any suggestions?

Is there another FREE utility that I can use to recover the data? I have a second harddrive to copy the files to if I can access them. I can't afford to overwrite the second harddrive, just add to it.

Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
d2

Number six will set the partion back into active mode if you didn't actually fdisk the partition. Setting the MBR (Master boot record) back to zero might help if #6 isn't correct.

Well, it's gone.

I downloaded and ran DataRecovery and it seemed to be going quite well until after about 45 minutes, the screen went blank as I lost video signal and the power light started to flash. I went into MBRWork again and there was nothing to be recovered anymore.

Thanks for your help anyways john-warren.

PS

Awwwww ****!

A man’s experience in life is directly proportional to the amount of things he destroys.

muchmark,

Then I guess my experience in life is growing quickly http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

BTW, does 4 Gb of data/programs count as one thing or many????

Counts for many so consider yourself "experienced". http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

I feel for you, I have 2 hard drives in my computer, installed Win2K Advanced Server, formatting the C: as NTFS, leaving all my data... MP3's, docs, etc. on the D: Fat32 drive. After about a week I decided to stop messing with server and go back to dual booting ME and 2K Pro. So I stuck the good ol 98SE boot disk in and ran "format c: /u". About halfway thru the format I realized that it was formatting my data drive and not my c: drive because the 98 boot diskc doesn't see NTFS partitions. I knew this all along, just, in my haste, didn't think about it and lost everything. We live and learn, and I learned big to be a little more careful... I used to think that fater installing Windows in all shapes and sizes hundreds of times that I didn't have to worry about the little things... boy was I wrong. Biggest crapper is I lost 10 gigs of Dave Matthews Band MP3's from all the concerts (19 so far) that I have been to. Bummer, I feel for you man.
