At work i am using a Duron system with win2k SP-2 loaded. I have a 40X CD-ROM and an HP9100 CD-RW on my computer. It seems like this started today but when i put in any CD, windows tells me it needs to be formated. I have tried the CD in a Dell running win2K with no problems. Both drives will pick up a music CD with no problems. I have run into this problem before but could not find a solution then. Any ideas on what the problem is? thank you for any help.

When you put the drive in a different machine, and it read a cd ok...did you try the same cd that failed in the first machine?..

Most times when Win tells you that a disk needs formatting, it is because the heads have shifted in the reader (mostly this happens with floppy drives) when the heads get off track, it does not see the original format, and wants to format the disk.

Ok, after re reading your post, I gather that you tried just the disk in another machine...so, if possible...can you also try the drive itself in a different machine...it is possible the laser heads have become mis aligned in the reader.
