i went to an online vendor to get some pc133 ram. they had a good price on price watch. so i add one to the cart and it brings up the checkout screen, but the shipping was *****ed out. at the botton it said shipping amount would be entered after payment info was recieved. what kind of **** is that. naturally i didnt order for fear i would be charged $30-$40 for shipping. do you think i should go back and get it or get from someone that tells you what the shipping will be.
update:
i went back to the site and submitted an order and you have to give tham all of your info i.e. name, address, and c/c # before they put in the shipping!
the site is www.augustustech.com (http://www.augustustech.com)

You could order it, if shipping is extortionate(it sounds like it will be) then tell them you will send in your own courier.....

Never ever give any details until you have cost, Man you don't know what they may add on,This seems like sharp practice to me, May be worth checking with CC company to find out if they are braking the trading agreement with the CC company, if they are report them, the sooner type of oprating is nailed the better, other wise others will try it to get their profits up. ( even if this one is giving a fair price on shipping, it's still a NO NO )

I have run into this **** too. in looking around to buy an item, I bought every thing for my new box over the net, the shipping and handeling costs, are quite often the determining factor in ordering, I don't mind giving my zip code to figure the shiping but often they want everything even the CC number before a final price, I just won't do business with these outfits. and if they have an EMail addy I tell them so. maybe we should all do so, and this will stop.

Ditto,
I've run into the same thing and I ALWAYS back the heck out of there.
An e-mail is a good idea, perhaps stating that you are also going to check into the legality of their practice with the BBB etc.
If they're not telling you up front, then they've got something to hide.

I just left this note at their site, doubt it will do a lot of good, but it can't hurt if they get a number like that.

The company may not even exist. Sure, they could have letterheads, websites, etc., but all you need for a company is to have two one penny shares, your total liability.

I also would not use that site.
I think that a user friendly site should give you all the information up front before you have to give them any information about yourself (except zip code for shipping).
I also think that every company should have a privacy statement that is easy to find, and when you do choose to enter the information, be given a choice to not recieve any farther notices or spam from the company.
Another thing I like is when a site puts there return policy in an easy to find place.
I think a company that is up front with the consumer shows a lot of professional ethics.
It's also reassuring to me when I see a phone number and a physical address listed, I like to think the company really does exist in the "real world".
