I've been wanting to purchase a CD-R for archiving purposes, not to mention for software back-up purposes. Currently, I've got over 4GB of full-length album MP3's. The music really comes in handy while surfing the net. Anyways, what's a good, yet affordable CD burner? Affordable meaning around $300. Thanks.

I'm using a friend's TEAC CD-R device...
About 400$ and you will have SCSI CD-writer and 36x CD-ROM.... Not bad...hehe!! Only thing you must have is SCSI card. Why all this? Perfect stability. SCSI speaks itsself. No problems with multitasking, IO etc. Only communicating throuh SCSI cable....

sorry for my poor english

I have an HP8100i. Got it for about $270.00. it's ide, but burns at 4X. I scrapped the Adaptec software and use the Nero demo ( will buy it soon, it's such a superior program ). I have no complaints.

is difference between 2x and 4x copy speed only, or is copy quality affected?

Ive had sonys,HP's, a Teac, and without a doubt Plextors the best. Overburns<burns disks up to 700 mb> writes in every concivable manner. And the 8X writed 650 mbs in 9 minutes. You can find them on the net for about $400.oo but you then NEED a PCI
SCSI card<min $100 > It's a luxery I know but everyone needs a hobby right? At any rate BUY A SCSI even if it's a 2X, You'll have alot LESS coasters going in the trash.
IDE's have been nothing trouble for me...IMHO

I'm not sure where you live but here in Ontario, Canada, HP has just reduced the retail version of 8100 from $499 to $399 (Canadian funds - $1.99 in American funds http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif). I'm pretty sure that it is the same in the States...
