56k modem connecting at 26.4

Hi, I have windows ME and a 56k modem acculy 3 56k modems. All of them I have tried on 2 differnet ISP's and they all connect at 26.4, I dont know if it is my phone line or if it is Windows ME, if anyone can help me with this I would owe you big!!!!

Most likely it is the phone line, but of course make sure your modem properties are set for a maximum connection speed of over 56K.

I have two phone lines at my house that run to different telephone company exchanges. Using various modems, one of the phone lines gets connections of 46K-53K and the other gets only 26K-28K. Its all based on line quality, distance to the switch, and how many digital-analog conversion cycles the signal goes through.

Ragtop is probably on the right track I have two phone lines from Bell - one connects at 49k regularly and the other connects at 45k regularly.
My brother in law connects at about 26K - He's wayyyyyy out in the booney's.

Your distance from the phone company definately has some effect on your connecting speed but also make sure you have the best drivers for your modem. I had one that was working fine and all by itself it lost the drivers and loaded some odd default driver that dropped me from 44k to 24k.Just a thought. Gary

Yup you all were right,
I called the phone company and they came out and my phoneline had been switched to some new voice transmision instead of normal copper, so they switched it back over to coper and im back up at about 50k.

I had a sim. problem where I use to live, upstairs in my room I could get 53 all the time, go down stairs and you were lucky to get 28 at the most, I still wonder about that one. Madfish
