They always work fine for me, unless there is obvious physical damage to the cd.

Axel 01-04-2000, 02:43 PM You might benefit from a CD-ROM cleaning kit. Perhaps you are only suffering from dirty optics. Lastly, in reference to the gaming magazine free CD's - I've seen a few of those carry viruses and don't touch them myself. I'll typically go right to the manufacturer's site and download the free demo from there if it really interests me. Toadman 01-04-2000, 03:52 PM I usually don't mess with the CD's myself either, and d/l from reputable sites also. Just kind of strange why it happens only with gaming mag demos, each and every issue, but not with retail CD's. Could be cheap transparent plastic or the stomp artwork. Thanks guys! Eli 01-04-2000, 05:29 PM Of the 5 CD drives I have access to (a 4x 4 CD changer, two 8xs, a 24x, a 40x, and a 4x2x8 burner), only one of the 8x's can read the CDs that come with magazines reliably. Of course, that's the only drive that I literally have so smack around before it'll open.... So you'r not alone, it's a common problem. Toadman 01-05-2000, 12:50 AM My autorun is active and works fine with all other progs I load from CD. But everytime I pick up one of those gaming mags with CD's, my 40X CD drive spins up and down several times, seeking the exe file. Eventually it will load, after 5 minutes of scan/seek! I tried to launch from explorer(Win98), but CD cannot be found in drive! Anyone else experience this with those freebie demo CD's? buitenb 01-05-2000, 03:08 PM hi i have a toshiba 40 speed drive and it eats it all !! blue or green or gold or grey recordables no troubles at full speed ! and normal cd s are running also high speed ! my öld"aopen 36 speed sucked most of the time it reads just fine and with some (to much)recorded cds it had troubles ! and i throwed it away ! no i am happy with my toshiba cd rom ! so throw away that piece of **** adn get yourself a good new one ! they real cheap ! Jerry 01-07-2000, 02:06 AM I too have a cd rom that dislikes some magazine cover cds, If I remember correctly the worst was a 'Boot' mag cd. It would spin up and down for what seemed liked hours, and even if you did go through the explorer it would behave the same. Fortunately I have a new drive now that has no probs with that cd. BTW it was a 24x pioneer, it just got worse with age until it was unbearable. Jerry SysOpt.com
