every time I goto print I get an error message that says:
There was an error writing to LPT1: for the printer(Canon MultiPASS C5000 printer)
Cannot access the port. It may be in use by another program. Quit other programs and try printing again.

I have win98SE can anyone help me? I have never had this problem before.

Check to make sure the printer in powered on and that it is On-line. Check the cable connection on the printer and on the computer. If this does not work then it may be neccessary to re-install drivers.

Assuming you are running a stand-alone PC, first go to start, then settings, then click on the 'printers' folder. Right click on your printer icon and make sure it is checked as 'default'. Also make sure it is not 'offline' or 'paused'. I have had this happen to me both at home and at work. Usually at work, a reboot fixes the problem. But at home, uninstalling the printer and it's software then and reinstalling worked. Good luck.
