Hi.

Im about to buy a notebook, but i hate all the preinstalled **** on it. Im planning only install the essential. Maybe winnt or 2k.

Can i do a fdisk, format and clean install on a notebook?
There is a walkthrough to do this?

TIA

the notebook should be not much different from a desktop system, but make sure that you have the drivers for all the devices on it. go throught the device manager before you reformat it and makes sure that you have drivers for all the main stuff. you'll also need to make sure you got the install files for the pc-card software and possibly any proprietary powersaving features.

one possible problem you might have is with the cd drive. make sure you make a bootable floppy that can load the cd drivers to make the drive accessible. test it first! since cd drives sometimes connect to laptops in strange ways, i don't know if generic cd drivers would work.

It isn't really any different than a PC desk-top model - Only thing is getting the different device drivers.

Also - before you start - you'll want to make sure that all of the peripherals on your notebook are covered on the WIN NT hardware compatability list (HCL). If it ain't on the list - chances are there isn't an NT driver and you might not get it to work under NT.

You can e-mail the notebook manufacturer and ask them those questions and they should be able to tell you and might have NT drivers stashed away to make your conversion easier.
