You may not need modem commands. Everyone told me to go to the Control Panel and change the slider to no volume but failed to tell me that after I changed the slider, I'd need to make a new dial-up connection and delete the old one (not anyone here). If that doesn't work, then ATMO is a code that should work. That is the one that is most given but, I must say, it didn't work with my modem. After I put in the code, my modem wasn't recognized. I'd have to erase the code and reboot for my system to dial out again.
Good luck and hope this helps.
Dave

Well, in my system, I can just go to the device manager, select my modem, click on properties, then click on the modem tab. There, there is a slider for pc speaker volume. I can slide mine up and down any nunmber of times, and thern click okay. It works for me...

daveleau,

Is that a 'oh' or a 'zero' in your code? From the rest of the text it looks like a 'oh'. The at/modem command to silence a modem is atm0 (three letters and the number zero).

I believe that the slider works when the modem uses your pc speaker. If the modem, has its own speaker, ot if it interfaces with the system in a propritary way, then you need the silence code from above.

USR's typically ship with a CD that has FAQ files on it for your particular modem. They should have the AT command which will turn down or turn off the modem connection sound.

I don't think it's a good idea to turn the sound off. At least if you had an external, you'd have the LED's to indicate what the modem was doing. With the internal, all you have is the sound of the hand-shake to indicate that something is happening.

In most of the cases like this where someone wants to turn off the sound, it's usually because mom or the wife doesn't want you calling out as much as you do on the damned computer, and you hope to conceal the connection by eliminating that oh-so familiar modem hand-shake noise - Amazing how that sound carries through the house - isn't it?? - BUSTED!

Thanks banti. I did have an 'oh' instead of a zero. Maybe that's why mine didn't work correctly. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif
