In the location bar, type something in the following format: http://?????????/
replace ?????? with some numbers, any number, any length, then you will see IE5 is trying to connect to some meaningful IP (on the status bar)... I did hit some websites this way... just curious, what's this all about?
I just tried to do the same thing in Netscape, it didn't work, Netscape tried to locate it as www.?????.com/net/... (http://www.?????.com/net/...)
Sound's like MS's idea of user friendly has created a hacker tool. - I can quite imagine a batch file scrolling through every I.P. looking for something interesting like a bank or un-protected gov or com web site.

I think it has something to do with the way the IP addresses are handled in IE. You can do a ping of the same thing using the MS ping, and you'll get the same thing. I figured out a little of how this works a while ago; I forget what the deal is now, though.
~Edit: Okay, I figured it out... since there are 256 numbers available for each digit in the IP address (0-255), adding the value of the IP address up, from right to left corresponds to the numbers.... i.e. for 0.0.0.5, try "5", but for 0.0.1.5, it would be "261". For 0.0.2.0, it would be "512", and so on.

JW, you are right... guess that is kind of IE5's internal way to store IP address. friendly IP?

Maybe I'm wrong, but I think you are just searching for sites by DNS entry, rather than site name, which is easier to use. hmm...

Hmmmmmmmmm.
Think you will find that this is just the 'search when url fails' routine working out a site to connect to
