Was wondering if adding a SCSI to your hard drive speeds it up much or is it just wasting $$$$$$$?? Or are the better options?

truthfully in less your into true server applications today's IDE ata66 drives are a more cost effective solution. But If you decide to go the scsi route there are diffently some great addvantages :-)

You refered to the ata66, is the a hard drive its self?

bigpig:

Forgive me if I err, I just pick up bits and pieces here and there. Ata66 drives will work on comps that have ata33 (not sure when this became standard). Its all transfer rate. I have heard that unless your system is built up around a 66, though, that performance suffers as a result of the processor and memory (in dma mode) having to time themselves to faster bursts.

Mntsnow... did I blow that above? maybe you (being the it pro you are http://www.sysopt.com/forum/wink.gif) could correct any errors?

ATA66 is now pretty much the standard for IDE harddrives. This is a "theroricial" speed. just like the rated speeds on SCSI. I have never seen a drive make the full rated speed wiether it be SCSI or IDE. but you can now buy a ATA66 for about 1/3 to 1/2 of the cost of a SCSI drive of the same size.

so what would u get if u added a scsi to a 66? would it speed it up? and is there a page to compare hardrive speeds and stuff like proccessor comparisons i think that is what bigpig was asking

Fat,
You can add a SCSI card to a system that has ATA66 but it will only work at the rated speed of the card and type of drives you use! So in short having a scsi card doesnt make your system's IDE ports any faster or slower...They are their own interface!

Mntsnow

ps just to totally clairify
IDE interfaces are normally built into the motherboard now days: the 2 most common are:
ATA33 is an IDE interface
ATA66 is an IDE interface

SCSI is normally a "add-in" card
Scsi has MANY flavors
scsi (narrow)=5mb/s transfer rate (50pin interface)
scsi2 (wide)=10mb/s (50 pin interface)
scsi3 also know as wide or ultra = 20mb/s (68 pin)
ultra2 or UW (ultrawide) = 40mb/s (68 pin)
ultra2wide or U2W = 80mb/s (68pin)
or the newest fiberchannel = 160mb/s
