first of all you should try disconnecting and reconnecting or querying the modem to see if windows stil thinks it's in use. if it does then try this when the modem has stopped responding:

open a dos box and type in ECHO ATZ > COMx
where is is the com port number of the modem.

If the modem works ok you should be disconnected and the modem reset in hardware.

Try connecting again and if it works then it's probably s/w not resetting th S-registers correctly - if it's a winmodem which it looks like then you may need to reinstall the driver as the enumerator doesn't look to be working correctly.

if it still doesn't connect or it wont disconnect with the echo command then it may be that the modem has failed

if you get port in use when querying modem or modem in use by another application when conencting then it is most likely s/w. remove the mode, enumerator (if there is one) and all com pors from device manager and reboot.

I am having about the same problem on my dual 1 gig system running 2k. I get errors when I dial up to my ISP. 2 or 3 when I connect, then it shoots up to 30 or 40 and continues... it stays connected, but I it starts affecting my asheron's call. My modem is an external 56k v.92 modem. I can install it and hook it up to my single processor 500 mhz p3 and I have no problems... What could be causing this to happen... I have posted on this forum before and got no help... let's try again...
