He has a Compaq 5441, a 17" KDS monitor and 8 meg shared video card. I have tried to change his setting from 256(16bit) to 256 and even 16 colors and I still cant change the monitors resolution. I checked with device manager everthing is ok, Any other suggestions?

Ensure the proper inf is installed for your monitor. Should be good to go from there....28/88

Rick thanks for your help.
I'd have to say Rick is right on the money. The *.inf files are typically in the c:\windows\inf folder. They hold descriptions of what your specific equipment is capable of within the settings. I believe that older versions of win95 did not have this folder/functionality as my win95A computers don't have it.
I recently updated my monitor inf file off the HP web site and then rebooted so that I could select my monitor by name and thus have a full range of settings available to me.
You might simply have the win95 generic "standard monitor" selected, thus being unable to select a different resolution.
So - check the manufacturer's web sites of both the monitor and video card for *.inf updates. That should help improve your color and resolution.
