Has anyone experienced something similar:

When ext. modem is powered on, I cannot turn on the PC. I have to turn off the modem, unplug the PC power cord frm mains, plug it back in and then turn the PC on.

What could be causing this? I have tried different BIOS (espec. APM) settings but nothing. I have also tried with several different modems with same results.

M/B: Abit BH6 SS bios

Try it on another pc. If it does the same thing then the modem has some sort of short. If if doesn't do it, then the problem is with the original pc.

I had an INTERNAL modem cause this a couple of times. Lightening had run in on both of them and shorted them out. The only way to get the computers to show any signs of life was to remove the modems.
