Quiet hard drives

Does anyone know of any systematic evaluation of hard drive noise levels? I would like to find one with no steady high pitched whine. I'm not as concerned about the head noise. Currently using IBM 13.6 7200.

Of all the 7200 RPM drives I've seen personally, Seagate is the loudest and IBM is the quitest.

If you want less noise than what you currently have...forget it.

Your ability to be annoyed by hard-drive whine indicates to the rest of us that you do not have enough back-ground noise in your computing environment. - Buy a better stereo to drown out the hardware noise.

Sorry - couldn't resist it - I'm used to telecom equipment rooms with hundreds of fans and several tons of AC equipment keeping the temp at a nice 62 degrees F.

My worst noise via computer comes when putting less than perfectly balanced game CD's into high-speed drives.

My fans inside my case drown out the hdd noise. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif I use a Maxtor 7200 20 GB and a WD 5400 13 GB. Neither was noisy though before I added the fans. The hdd cooler is by far the loudest (IStorm)
