Today I had Cox Communications install broadband. After he fiddled with all the network settings, for some reason the puter will not restart or shut down. When you go to restart it locks up on the windows is shutting down logo. When you shut down the screen does clear, but there is a flashing cursor in the upper left corner of the screen. It never completly shuts down. The puter was working ok until the cox man came. Again the only thing he did was play around with the network neighborhood settings. Here's the details on the system. P3-850, MSI bx master mobo, 60gb hd, 256mb ram, CD, CDR, ati grahics xpert98, creative sound card, D-links nic(I did have some trouble at first getting the puter to recognize the nic). Running win98se. Thanks, Frank.

Hard to say what he could have done but it could be similar to my problem. Read my thread...

How is the cable modem installed? Is it hooked up via USB by chance?

Im sorry i think you said something about a NIC. Do you have anything USB installed, if so unhook all the USB stuff and try shutting the computer down.

Seems acpi isn't functioning. If you press the power button what happens? Does it shutdown or does it do anything? If it doesn't, you might have soft off which requires you to push the power button for four seconds.

Problem fixed. It turns out that there was something wrong with the nic card. The nic card was a D-Linkys DFE-530TX+. I replaced it with another D-Linkys card no. Line100tx. Everything is working including my cable internet connection. Funny thing is the original nic showed it was working properly in device manager. The cable guy did not suspect the card when he saw that. Like I said in my original post, I did have some trouble installing the first card. I had to try 3 PCI slots in order for windows to even recognize it. Anyway, thanks for the replies. PS, if broadband is available in your area, get it. It is remarkably fast. Pages just open when you click!! See ya, Frank.
