When windows98se starts it only loads my wallpaper and some of the icons then it hangs and nothing I do works. Doing alt-ctrl-del nothing happens, the only way I can get out is to either reset or shut down the computer. Then naturally when I start up again I get the error msg windows was not shutdown properly.
System:
mb - gigabyte 5ax
hd - seagate 4g
ram - 130mb
cpu - intel 233mmx
sound - cirrus
video - s3 virge 4mb
modem - 33k
Please help, this is a system that I built for a friend, this was my first attempt and now that I am having so many problems it looks like I don't know what I am doing(losing face). Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Did you install Win98SE fresh after reformatting the hard drive? If not, that's what you need to do.

Yes, it was a clean install

Try pulling out all ISA and PCI cards except for the video. Reboot and see if it still does it. If not, add them one at a time, rebooting in between each. Use different slots for the cards if possible....ie just switch em around.
Actually, before you even try it, get the most recent driver for each item and have it handy for when you reinstall. Sounds to me like you have a bad driver or a resource conflict.

Thanks for your help. This is on a system I built for my friend. I will try this and let you know if that solved the problem. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Will it boot into safe mode? To get to safe mode hold down the F8 key right before the Win98 splash screen.
Did it install all the drivers/detect all hardware and then work for a while or is it still in the install process?

It installed all drivers, drives and hardware it doesn't hang until it has started loading program icons. It even installs the wallpaper. After the wallpaper loads and 3/4 of the icons is when it hangs and nothing will shut it down. The computer is at my friends house so I can't try to start in safe mode until I go over to her house. As soon as I can get there I will be letting everyone know what happens. Thanks for you help. http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

remove and reinsert the memory, even into different slots if available.... also try defaulting the bios settings and working to set the memory back slowly on everybootup until you rech the problem.... http://www.sysopt.com/forum/smile.gif

Let us know what happens. You can look in the bootlog.txt file to see what is hanging it up, it should be the last thing on the list.

How do I look at the bootlog.txt?
